Brief Encounter

David Lean
November 26, 1945

Sinopsis

Brief Encounter is a 1945 British Romantic Drama Film directed by David Lean. It focuses on suburban life, and in particular the story of Laura, a married woman with children whose conventional life becomes incrasingly complicated because of a chance meeting with a stanger Alec at a railway station.
They inadvertently but quickly progress into an emotional love affair, which brings about unexpected consequences.

LOCATIONS

Lean’s romantic drama is supposedly set in Milford Junction, Kent South-east England where Laura Jessop (Celia Johnson) meets Dr Alex Harvey (Trevor Howard) for their chastely clandestine afternoons. In reality, the mainline railway station where much of the location shooting was undertaken, was CarnforthRailway StationLancashire, about five miles north of the town of Lancaster.

In the film the town of Beaconsfield Buckinghamshire is used as a substitute for Milford. High Street. The Barrel Organ and Boots the Chemist scenes were shot on Station and Burke’s Parade.

Other film locations are somewhat legion. The cinema where the couple see the trailer for the film “The Flames of Passion’ was the old Metropole Picture House based at 160 Victoria Street London (now an Italian restaurant Ask) while the boating lake and associated bridge featured in the film was in Regents Park London.
